Issue: Attempts to collect debt not owed

Subissue: Debt is not yours

Consumer Complaint: I keep getting collection notices in the mail from a company called CONVERGENT who claims they are authorized on behalf of XXXX to collect a debt owed to them. I never had a XXXX account, and I just called them to confirm that no one else has created a bogus account with my info- They said I would have have received collection notices first from XXXX themselves, and they also said they have never even heard of this company, CONVERGENT. I am weary about calling CONVERGENT myself to dispute their false claim, b/c I suspect they are a fraudulent company, so I'm not going to call them and give them any more of my personal info. I have tried to report them to the XXXX, but b/c they are a non-accredited business, the XXXX can not take any further action besides lodging my complaint. I've read other bad things about this company, CONVERGENT, sending out bogus collection notices, and some people even claim they affected their credit history negatively. So I'm reaching out now to the CFPB to make you aware that this company is fraudulently reporting false debt owed by me to XXXX when none exists. Thanks, XXXX XXXX

Issue: Attempts to collect debt not owed

Subissue: Debt was result of identity theft

Consumer Complaint: On XXXX XXXX XXXX, I received a letter dated XXXX XXXX XXXX from Convergent Outsourcing attempting to collect a dept totaling {$440.00} for the creditor XXXX. I have never used XXXX 's services, and had not previously heard of the company. The debt breaks down as follows : {$210.00} Equipment fee, and XXXX service fee. I called Convergent Outsourcing on XXXX XXXX XXXX to inquire about the debt and was informed that XXXX is a cable service provider. Convergent informed me that XXXX provided service to an account opened in my name, using my social security number, to the address of XXXX XXXX XXXX, XXXX XXXX XXXX, XXXX NY XXXX. Service ended XXXX XXXX XXXX and Convergent Outsourcing was contacted to collect the debt. I have never lived in NY, nor have I ever had any business at the aforementioned address, nor have I corresponded with XXXX to provide service. I informed the Convergent Outsourcing representative of this and that the debt was the result of fraudulent activity. The representative then agreed to mail me a fraud package to complete and return to Convergent Outsourcing. After contacting the collection agency, I contacted XXXX on XXXX XXXX XXXX and was told that the account was opened in XX/XX/XXXX and closed in XX/XX/XXXX. The representative informed me XXXX would wave the {$210.00} equipment fee, and contact Convergent Outsourcing, but I have not yet seen evidence of this. XXXX refused to wave the {$230.00} service fee. On XXXX XXXX XXXX, I contacted XXXX, an identity monitoring service that I use. XXXX XXXX recommended I call the three credit bureaus to freeze my credit, which I did that same day. I'm currently working with a credit restoration specialist from XXXX provided by XXXX. The credit restoration specialist has opened an investigation into the matter and will be contacting Convergent Outsourcing on my behalf. On XXXX XXXX XXXX, the credit restoration specialist recommended I file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission via their website. The FTC site then directed me to the Consumer Finance website to finalize the form.

Issue: Attempts to collect debt not owed

Subissue: Debt was paid

Consumer Complaint: On XX/XX/XXXX, I paid off a debt from XXXX XXXX XXXX company XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX. Paid by money order {$320.00} by certified mail, received from XXXX letter stating paid in full, everything fine, On XX/XX/XXXX, I received a letter this time from Convergent Outsourcing/XXXX XXXX XXXX stating I owe the amount but if I pay half. That constitutes Mail Fraud under 18 USC 940 ( section 1341 ) I made all copies of all my documents back from XXXX including certified letter, and money order to Convergence. In addition, I contacted the original collections, XXXX who stated " everything was paid off years ago, creditor notified ''. This is a scam and needs to be investigated. How many people pay off their debts, forget about it than get a letter saying if you pay half? This is deception in it's purest form and constitutes the legal basis of fraud. This agency and the FTC needs to investigate immediately and shut these operations down. I have these companies ( 14 ) days to correct their activities otherwise I will file in a California Superior Court. In addition, will file a complaint with the California Attorney Generals Office.
