Issue: Struggling to repay your loan

Subissue: Problem lowering your monthly payments

Consumer Complaint: I currently have 4 separate student loans that I have been paying on for years with XXXX, XXXX, XXXX XXXX and american education services, they are both federal and private, I am drowning in student loan debt, when I graduated 4 years ago with my XXXX in XXXX I owed approximately {$160000.00} in student loan debt, I have been paying approximately {$1000.00} a month since XX/XX/XXXX and my payments just went up again, meanwhile I still owe {$160000.00} in student loans, my balance does not appear to be going down but actually going up, I have other monthly expenses such as a mortgage, car, utilities etc that I am now having a hard time paying, I had to file a chapter XXXX back in XX/XX/XXXX, I work full time as a XXXX and make a decent salary but these student loans are killing me and I can't get ahead, I was divorced recently so my filing status changed to single, I am on an income driven repayment plan with XXXX and when I submitted my renewal application with my new single filing status my payment went from {$270.00} a month to now {$370.00} a month starting in XX/XX/XXXX, my payment with american education services just increased from {$470.00} a month to {$490.00} a month due to interest rate increase, XXXX XXXX increased from {$110.00} a month to {$110.00} from interest rate increase, and I am now waiting to see if my payment with navient of {$220.00} a month is going to increase as well, I have tried desperately to get these amounts lowered, but all 4 companies said there is nothing more they can do, I am ineligible for forbearance or deferment as I have exhausted all of that, my ex spouse is a cosigner on most of these loans and if something happens to me and I can't pay them, they will go after him. I need some help here, this is no way for a person who is educated and works so hard to throw money out the window to these lenders every month and not see a light at the end of the tunnel, XXXX said my loan would be forgiven in 25 years ... .in 25 years, I will be XXXX years old, these lenders only look at your income, they don't factor in your other monthly expenses, and they don't seem to care, even with a chapter XXXX

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer

Subissue: Received bad information about your loan

Consumer Complaint: I am making payments towards Public Service Loan Forgiveness ( PSLF ) on my federal loans, and my loan servicer is XXXX XXXX. I have submitted Employment Certification forms twice per years, which then initiates a count of the current number of qualifying payments. XXXX has not correctly counted the number of qualifying payments I have made on some of my loans. In XX/XX/XXXX I requested an official recount of the number of qualifying payments for all of my loans. I was told this process would take up to 120 days. It is now the end of XX/XX/XXXX and I have yet to receive a recount of my qualifying payments. I have contacted XXXX several times about this issue. My latest contact was today, XX/XX/XXXX, and I was now told there is no estimate for the amount of time it will take to recount my number of qualifying payments. I am requesting the CFPB to hold XXXX accountable to complete a recount of the number of qualifying payments I have made.

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer

Subissue: Trouble with how payments are being handled

Consumer Complaint: I currently have federal student loans from XXXX XXXX serviced by XXXX. I'm doing PSLF and have my loans in IBR. Each year I submit income verification form and did so this year. Prior years my payments were lower due to lower income, and this year my payment increased to the 10yr repayment as income was high. I received a letter dated XX/XX/2018 from XXXX. " -- We received your documentation for your annual recertification but determined that you do not have a partial financial hardship ; therefore, your new payment amount is not based on your income and family size. Your loans will remain on the Income-Based Repayment ( IBR ) plan but your payment amount changed to XXXX. -- '' And then I discovered that on XX/XX/2018 {$20000.00} of interest was capitalized. This raised my loan balance from $ XXXX to $ XXXX. I called XXXX on XX/XX/2018 to find out about why interest was capitalized. I was initially told that it is because I didn't submit my re-certification. I told them that I did ( it even says so in their letter ). They then told me that there are 2 types of IBR plans, and I was in the one that had financial hardship and now I'm in the one that doesn't. And because of this change they triggered an interest capitalization. I went on studentaid.ed.gov and there was no mention of the situation I encountered. There was mention that if you don't re-certify income the interest does get capitalized. But I did re-certify my income. Please help me remove this interest capitalization. I do not see this as appropriate. It was either a mistake, or a deceptive practice. I'm in IBR plan, my income has increased so I'm paying more while under the IBR plan and they capitalize my interest. This makes my total repayment even higher. I would greatly appreciate your assistance.

Consumer Complaint: I've tried to reduce my monthly payments based on my income. I have yet to get an answer and it has been over 30 days. I have submitted all the documents and applied for the reduction twice. However, every day I get at least two or three emails demanding that I make a payment.

Subissue: Trouble with how payments are being handled

Consumer Complaint: On XX/XX/2018 I received three letters from XXXX in response to three Employment Certification Forms sent on XX/XX/2018. Original copies of all three Employment Certification Forms from three separate school districts were sent to XXXX via USPS Priority Mail. Copies of each were taken and maintained along with Priority Mail receipt. All three letters from XXXX denied PSLF qualification. The first denial was based on " certified employment dates listed on ( your ) ECF were prior to the date ( you ) received ( your ) Direct Loans that would be eligible for PSLF. '' The second denial was based on " Your employer did not provide the begin date of your employment in Section 3. The authorized official at your employer should contact us within 90 days of the date of this letter to provide us with this information so we can process your request. If you want us to consider your request after the 90 days, complete and submit new ECF and make sure to complete all of the required fields. '' This is FALSE and is an INTENTIONAL ERROR on the part of XXXX as BOTH the original and copy of the Employment Certification Form have the begin date in Section 3. The third denial was based on " The authorized official at your employer did not provide the date they signed the form in Section 4. Complete and return the enclosed form. Don't forget to have your employe sign and date the form in Section 4. " This is FALSE and is an INTENTIONAL ERROR on the part of XXXX as BOTH the original and copy of the Employment Certification Form have the date the employer signed the form in Section 4. These are INTENTIONAL ERRORS and FALSE statements on the part of XXXX to delay and possibly deny what is my legal and fair right to apply for and receive the Public Service Loan Forgiveness under United States law.

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer

Subissue: Received bad information about your loan

Consumer Complaint: XX/XX/XXXX : I called XXXX XXXX customer service due to not being able to complete my IBR renewal online following submitting for a name change. The online system had not updated my last name from marriage and their online system reflected that I did not have any student loans to renew. I spoke with customer service about my concern submitting this renewal prior to my due date. The customer service representative told me that I could submit my photo ID to the upload box online and that if my IBR was a little late while the name change was processed that this would not be an issue. I uploaded the required documents on XX/XX/XXXX following my phone call. XX/XX/XXXX : Called XXXX XXXX with concern that name change was still not reflected and I could not complete IBR renewal as my account was still not reflecting having any loans in my name. Customer service agent told me that the name change request was never submitted and she then said the best I can do is mail you a paper copy for your IBR renewal. It will take 7-10 business days. I requested it be sent out and reiterated my concern of completing on time. XX/XX/XXXX : received copy of IBR renewal. Submitted online on XX/XX/XXXX. XX/XX/XXXX : called and spoke with customer service following notification of upcoming payment due on XX/XX/XXXX in the amount of {$700.00}. Customer service representative, XXXX told me that my IBR request was approved but not until XX/XX/XXXX. I relayed concern with previous calls and asked for this to be changed. XXXX reported that she could put in a request to review my account but that a name change isnt a good excuse when the renewal is available online. I asked XXXX to please review the information listed about my previous calls. XXXX told me that the review would take 7-10 business days to review. I responded that this would take me to the due date of my XXXX payment and asked her to expedite the request. XXXX advised me to suspend my payment or apply for forebearence. XXXX stated that she would try to expedite the review.

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer

Subissue: Received bad information about your loan

Consumer Complaint: I submitted an employment certification form to XXXX XXXX and noticed that the number of qualifying payments was significantly less than the actual amount of payments I made. Some loans showed 9 qualifying payments while others showed 6, even though they were all handled under the same IDR and payments were collected on all loans at the same time through direct debit. When I submitted a request to XXXX on XX/XX/2018, they said they would check on it and let me know within 70-90 days. At the time I believed I had made at least 12 on time, qualifying payments. I was at the same government organization for the entire time and had already submitted an ECF the year before. I am still at that organization. I followed up on XX/XX/2018 after over 90 days and XXXX said it would take even longer. I have kept records and know I have submitted 18 qualifying payments at this point. I followed up with XXXX again on XX/XX/2018 ( 132 days later ) and have not received a response.

Subissue: Problem with personal statement of dispute

Consumer Complaint: I originally disputed late payments. I ended up sending goodwill letters asking for late payments to be removed to American Educational Services. Now on my reports its says that i am still disputing, which I am not, after resolution. I sent letters saying I am not disputing and to remove statement several times off my credit reports to the credit bureaus and AES with no response. I would like the statement removed.

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer

Subissue: Received bad information about your loan

Consumer Complaint: I first had my loan serviced through XXXX XXXX, and when I found out about XXXX, I was employed through the XXXX Department XXXX XXXX XXXX. I was hired on XX/XX/2016, and made about a year of qualifying payments since the hire date. I then applied for XXXX, and was advised my loan servicer will be changed to XXXX, but was advised that the qualifying payments I had made being employed by XXXX to the XXXX XXXX-serviced loans would qualify towards my total. However, the story has changed. Now I'm being told the year+ I had made qualifying XXXX payments would not count towards the total, and for some reason my qualifying payment total keeps being reset to XXXX. I have made about XXXX payments thus far while being under XXXX, yet my number of payments is still XXXX. It seems like I have not made any progress towards XXXX at all, even after making payments while being employed under XXXX for more than XXXX years now.
