Issue: Closing your account

Subissue: Company closed your account

Consumer Complaint: On XX/XX/XXXX, I attempted to use my Discover credit card to make a purchase with XXXX XXXX, and to my unpleasant surprise, my card was declined. I didnt overthink it since I figured it was some technical hiccup, so I used a different credit card and went about my day. Imagine my surprise when my card was declined again on XX/XX/XXXX at XXXX. It was at this point that I logged in to my account and noticed that {$0.00} were available of my {$21000.00} credit line with less than {$200.00} in charges currently on my account. On XX/XX/XXXX, I called the Discover support team to which I was met with no information and asked to call back the next day since the department I needed to speak with was unavailable. I called in again on XX/XX/XXXX and was informed that my account was closed and to look for information in the mail. According to the letter received from Discover, my account was closed due to a business decision without any details as to why and without any prior notice to allow for resolution of the supposed issue. According to the CARD Act of 2009, financial institutions such as Discover are required to provide a notice of account closure at least 14 days before the action being taken, which was not done, in addition to only providing a vague reason as to why my account was closed, leading me to believe that I am being unfairly targeted by Discover for questionable and seemingly unethical reasons. I feel that this closure was unfair, unjustified and without merit since I have followed the guidelines of the Cardmember Agreement and have never been late on payments in the 4+ years that I have been a customer of Discover.

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer

Subissue: Received bad information about your loan

Consumer Complaint: First of all, discrimination. Loan was under XXXX XXXX, and that has been dissolved and discharged by the SSA under total an permanent disability. Secondly, Discover is now trying to collect amount under XXXX XXXX XXXX, which never obtained this loan, thus Discover is involved in gender discrimination. Now, they way there is a XXXX balance, and keeping about {$1000.00} that was incorrectly collected and discover is keeping as loan under XXXX XXXX was indeed discharged under total and permanent disability by the SSA. Now, discover is being evasive and not reporting credit truthfully and that the account has been discharged under XXXX XXXX, and moreover, discriminating against XXXX XXXX XXXX, as there is NO loan by her under this entity.

Issue: Problem with a purchase shown on your statement

Subissue: Card was charged for something you did not purchase with the card

Consumer Complaint: I contacted Discover several times over the last 3 years via phone, chat, and email to investigate identity theft that happened. They have yet to accurately complete an investigation, have never gave me temporary credits previously, never froze my account, and never helped me to take preventative action. This led to Discover sending additional and UN-authorized cards to addresses that I have never lived at, and to people that I do not know. The fraud continued to happened and led to over {$10000.00} ( and possibly up to {$50000.00} ) worth of fraud charges that I am still attempting to be reimbursed for from Discover. These were some of the first charges and if Discover would have taken action, a lot more could have been prevented. I have provided police reports, FTC identity theft reports, credit reporting reports, and my own personal expenses to hire experts to prove that my identity was stolen and fraud happened on my card. The following charges in early 2017 should be investigated as they were not authorized. In addition all charges for unauthorized cards should be removed. XX/XX/17 XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX CO {$27.00} XX/XX/ XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX CO {$9.00} XX/XX/ XXXX XXXX CA {$100.00} XX/XX/ XXXX XXXX CA {$27.00} XX/XX/ XXXX XXXX CA {$51.00} XX/XX/ XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX CO {$12.00} XX/XX/17 XXXX XXXX XXXX CA {$190.00}XX/XX/XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX {$30.00}XX/XX/XXXXXXXX XXXX CA {$87.00}XX/XX/XXXXXXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX CO {$30.00} XX/XX/ XXXX XXXX CA {$63.00} XX/XX/ XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX CO {$35.00} XX/XX/ XXXX XXXX XXXX # XXXX XXXX XXXX CO {$53.00}XX/XX/XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX # XXXX XXXX XXXX CO {$11.00}XX/XX/XXXX XXXXXXXX XXXX XXXX # XXXX XXXX XXXX CO {$5.00} XX/XX/ XXXX XXXX XXXX # XXXX XXXX XXXX CO {$25.00}XX/XX/XXXX XXXXXXXX XXXX CA {$130.00}XX/XX/XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX NY {$48.00} XX/XX/ XXXX XXXX XXXX {$110.00} XX/XX/XXXXXXXX XXXX CA {$60.00} XX/XX/ XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX CA {$60.00} Up to today Discover has not provide any findings for any of my requests for investigations into fraud. Discover has not provided any evidence that these are legitimate charges. Discover has knowingly sent my credit cards to incorrect addresses to a known fraud user. Discover has provided no monetary response to the financial hardship they have put me through. Discover has falsified or removed their documentation to cover the lack of action. I have seen that my current balance is negative. There are no details but a generic balance transfer amount to possibly cover all the fraud charges. However they are not allowing me to close the account and take this money that is owed to me.

Issue: Advertising and marketing, including promotional offers

Subissue: Confusing or misleading advertising about the credit card

Consumer Complaint: On XX/XX/2019, I accepted Discover Card balance transfer offer to pay {$6000.00} toward my son 's College tuition. The offer was 0 % interest for 12 months with a 4 % transfer fee. After 12 months, the interest would be current rates 14-15 % ( currently 14.25 % ). Nothing in the Discover promotional materials stated that my prior ( higher interest ) balance would be paid only after the minimum balance was applied to the 0 % transfer balance. I have paid approximately {$880.00} in unexpected interest despite sending well more than the minimum payment for many months. I had approximately {$7000.00} balance before adding the {$6000.00} at " 0 % Interest ''. My other cards use a " first in first out '' payment strategy on transfers unless they clearly state otherwise per appropriate advertising law. In other words, transfers are truly 0 % interest ( after the percent transfer fee ) as long as the prior balance is being repaid and until the term of the transfer ( 12 months or more ) is exceeded. Nothing in the Discover promotional materials described why I would no longer receive cashback bonuses on the earlier balance but these also have ended. I have been an excellent Discover customer over 10 years and have a FICO score of 811. Am attaching statements showing my excellent and timely payment history. I am asking FTC and/or CFPB to sanction Discover for not making terms clear in the offer promotion ( it does no good to show these terms on the back of a statement after the transfer has been completed -- terms need to be made clear up front ). I believe this is deceptive advertisement and worthy of a class action suit.

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer

Subissue: Trouble with how payments are being handled

Consumer Complaint: I have a XXXX loan with Discover. I have been faithful in making payments for several years without being late. They had a " glitch '' in their system recently that they were aware about, according to XXXX whom I spoke with today, that resulted in us being switched, without our consent, from paper statements to paperless. We relied upon the paper statements to stay on top of our payments. As a result of their error, we missed a monthly payment and we lost our XXXX XXXX interest rate deduction for timely payments. I contacted the company and spoke to the above person, who said that even though it was their mistake, there was nothing they could do to reinstate our interest rate deduction for timely payments. As a consequence of their glitch, I am paying a higher interest rate on my loan for the foreseeable future.

Subissue: Their investigation did not fix an error on your report

Consumer Complaint: I sent in a dispute 5 years ago on Discover credit card service. It had been removed off all credit reports. They will change my name off by one letter or change address to have XXXX have it reappear on my credit report .XXXX keeps having Discover reappear on my credit report. I have sent in my police report, revoked any power attorney, never gave consent for Discover to use my name or to put anything on my credit report. I want XXXX to remove Discover off my credit report and block them.

Issue: Managing an account

Subissue: Funds not handled or disbursed as instructed

Consumer Complaint: I and my husband have few accounts with Discover bank. Checking account with debit card although has my husband 's name on it has my social security deposited into it. I exclusively manage all accounts. From that checking account I instituted monthly payment for my car to XXXX XXXX in the amount of {$500.00} to reach by a due date of XX/XX/XXXX of each month. For some unknown reason payment in XX/XX/2019 was not made on time and I made an order for electronic payment on XX/XX/2019. Discover usually mails a check. That belated checked XXXX attempted to cash twice until I called them and told them that since they received an electronic transfer there is not money to cash the check because funds were exhausted in that electronic transfer. Yet Discover mailed me by mail and through secure message center on line sent me notices about " insufficient funds. '' XX/XX/XXXX payment was cancelled altogether although Discover claims that it was me or my husband who cancelled the payment which is a lie. At this point it is clear that Discover acts as a fraudster.
